No one wants to deal with the stress of a break-in, stolen car, or losing belongings to a pickpocket—especially when things can turn physical or even violent.

There are few simple steps that can make a big difference in keeping you safe.
Here are some suggestions of practical tips to help you stay one step ahead of thieves.
1. Protect Your Home from Robbery
In order to make it harder for the intruders, you can:
Don’t answer the door if you’re not expecting someone.Intruders often pose as delivery drivers or utility workers to gain access. Always check through a peephole or camera and verify their identity before opening the door.
Secure doors and windows: Use deadbolt locks on all entry points, and ensure windows have secure latches.
Light it up: Install motion-sensor lights outside your home to deter thieves. Consider smart lighting that mimics your presence when you’re away.
Install a security system—or fake it: Modern security systems with cameras, alarms, and apps provide real-time updates and deter intruders. If you cannot afford one, consider getting fake security cameras, especially those with blinking lights, to make intruders think twice about targeting your home.
Don’t broadcast your absence: Avoid announcing travel plans on social media. Have a trusted neighbour pick up your mail or park in your driveway to make your house appear occupied.
Keep valuables out of sight: Store expensive items like jewelry, electronics, or cash in a safe or hidden location.
2. Prevent Vehicle or Bicycle Theft
Vehicles and bicycles are prime targets for thieves, but these tips can help protect them:
Lock your vehicle: Always lock your car, even if you’re stepping away briefly, such as at a gas station. When paying for petrol, consider using a mobile app to pay directly from your phone, reducing the need to step out of your car—especially in isolated or unfamiliar areas.
Protect your bicycle: Use a sturdy lock through the frame and wheels. For expensive bikes, consider installing a hidden GPS tracker under the seat or within the frame. Thieves can often break locks, and real-time tracking may be the only viable option to recover your bike. If stolen, share the tracker’s location with the police. Adding an identifiable mark on your bike can also help prove ownership.
Choose well-lit areas: While visibility doesn’t always deter crime, parking in well-lit and populated spots is safer than secluded, dark areas.
Secure your valuables: Never leave belongings visible in your car. Store them in the trunk or remove them entirely. For bicycles, remove accessories like lights or saddlebags when parked.
3. Avoid Street Theft
Whether walking in crowded urban areas or quiet streets, staying vigilant is key:
Watch your surroundings: Stay alert, especially in crowded areas or unfamiliar places. Avoid distractions like checking your phone while walking.
Keep your belongings secure: Use crossbody bags with zippers or anti-theft backpacks. Avoid keeping wallets or phones in back pockets, and always keep your bag closed.
Don’t display valuables: Avoid flashing expensive jewelry, gadgets, or cash in public, as these can make you a target.
Stick to well-lit areas: Stay on well-lit streets at night, and avoid shortcuts through alleys or isolated pathways.
Trust your instincts: If someone seems suspicious or follows you, move to a crowded area or enter a shop. Don’t hesitate to call for help if you feel unsafe.
While no method is entirely theft-proof, these simple safety steps can reduce your risk. Awareness and preparation are your best tools for protecting your home, vehicle, and personal belongings.
